“There Is No Cure”

Choose HealthWhat is a cure?  Here are some definitions I found….

  • relieve (a person or animal) of the symptoms of a disease or condition.
  • a substance or treatment that cures a disease or condition
  • restoration to health
  • a solution to a problem

Variations of diets discussed in this blog have induced remission for Crohns and Ulcerative Colitis patients for YEARS without any medications.  How exciting!  For others, the diets discussed have improved the quality of life for Crohns and Colitis patients significantly and now they are taking minimal drugs and living FULL lives! Could this be the cure we are looking for?

It’s not “easy” to follow these diets but it’s not easy dealing with all the side effects of the drugs we are taking and surgeries we must endure (sometimes multiple surgeries).  It’s not easy going to the bathroom 15 times a day.  It’s not easy finding blood in our stool.  It’s not easy getting diagnosed with other diseases caused by our drugs and disease.  It’s not easy knowing that we have to be on medication for the rest of our lives.  It’s not easy believing that we have no control and are at the mercy of the medical community to do research and develop New Drugs or More Drugs or Stronger Drugs!!!

We ARE empowered!  We have the ability to heal ourselves!!!  We can make the choice each and every day to be WELL and heal ourselves without medication!

In addition, variations of these diets can heal many diseases including autoimmune disease, many neurological conditions (anxiety, depression, autism, Alzheimer’s), heart disease, diabetes and more!!  We have the ability to heal ourselves!

Diet DOES Matter!!

Healthy 7How can a doctor say that “Diet doesn’t matter”?  Why did I believe them?  The “standard” medical community tells us that the 3 -9 daily pills matter but the 3-5 POUNDS of food we eat everyday doesn’t matter??  I feel like such a fool!  Our food goes THROUGH our intestines EVERY day and that is where we have our disease.  OF COURSE, Food Matters!!!  Diet DOES Matter!!  That 3-5 pounds of food that we put in our bodies everyday SHOULD be our medicine.  Food is Medicine and we need to ensure that everything that goes into our mouth is nutrient rich and will HEAL us and not hurt us!  If we can HEAL our gut, we can HEAL or life!!!  As Dr Natasha McBride says, we need to Heal and Seal our Gut Lining!!  This is true for EVERYONE suffering from any chronic disease but especially important for those of us with Crohns and Colitis.  We CAN heal and seal our gut with FOOD.  We can use food as medicine!!  We can change our lives and get off of our medications!!  We have the power!!   We are empowered to change the course of our disease!!

Unfortunately, these diets are not a “quick fix” and for some people it may take a year to fully recover and slowly ease off of your medications (with the help of your doctor) but you WILL get better.  For some people, you may be healed in 6 months.   We are all unique and depending on the severity of the disease and your specific food sensitivities, your timeline will be different.   In addition, I highly recommend incorporating lifestyle changes including reducing stress, relaxation/meditation and plenty of sleep.

You must take these diet changes seriously!  You have to WANT to get well and follow these diets/protocols 100% in order to heal our sensitive gut lining.  While you are still inflamed, you cannot “cheat” or you will jeopardize your healing.  After you have fully healed your gut lining for 6+ months, you could “test” foods outside the diet for occasional treats but you will have to watch your reactions to these foods.  Since you will feel so GREAT after being on these diets, you won’t want to “cheat”.  You will be busy enjoying life and freedom and health!  You will feel empowered because you now have the tools to be healthy and stay healthy and enjoy life to the fullest!!!!

Enjoy this journey to healing and health!!!!

The Oiling of America – Sally Fallon

I was fortunate to be able to see Sally Fallon speak in San Diego recently.  She is a brilliant woman trying to share the message of health, whole foods and healing with the world.  She is the President and Founder of the Weston A Price Foundation (WAPF).  The WAPF is a great resource to help explain why we don’t need to worry about our cholesterol numbers but we need to focus on everything we put in our mouth and make sure it’s full of nutrition.  Emphasis on grass fed meats, wild caught fish, organ meats, raw milk (if tolerated), grass fed butter (if tolerated – buy Kerry Gold), vegetables, fish oils, fermented foods and more.  You can download the slide presentations for free here.

I also recommend Dr Weston A Price’s book  Nutrition and Physical Degeneration.

I don’t eat meat for religious reasons!

I have studied numerous diets and healing protocols and animal products* are extremely healing for our guts – especially bone broth/gelatin.  Animal products are extremely nutritious and healing!

I cannot provide too much advice in this area but Dr Terry Wahls healed from progressive Multiple Sclerosis with a Paleo Type diet and she has a meat free option in her book.  The Wahls Protocol    I highly recommend this option for vegetarians and I highly recommend this book for anyone trying to heal from any autoimmune disease including Crohns and Colitis.

*I do want to highlight that all meats should be 100% grass fed, wild caught fish or organic poultry.  This is important.  Grain fed meats are HIGH inflammatory and unhealthy for anyone with a chronic disease.

Nourishing Traditional Diets – The Key to Vibrant Health

I was fortunate to be able to see Sally Fallon speak in San Diego recently (March 2014).  She is a brilliant woman trying to share the message of health, whole foods and healing with the world.  She is the President and Founder of the Weston A Price Foundation (WAPF).  The WAPF is a great resource to help explain why we don’t need to worry about our cholesterol numbers and saturated fat.  She explains very well in her oiling of america presentation.  We do need to focus on everything we put in our mouth and make sure it’s full of nutrition and not full of highly processed vegetable oils or margarine.   Emphasis on grass fed meats, wild caught fish, organ meats, raw milk (if tolerated), grass fed butter (if tolerated – buy Kerry Gold), vegetables, fish oils, fermented foods and more.  You can download the slide presentations for free here.

True or False? Meat is unhealthy and causes cancer and heart disease!

In my quest for healing, I tried everything!  I ate vegan, vegetarian,  no red meat, juicing, fasting, and more.    I watched the movie Forks over Knives and read the China Study and thought meat caused cancer and heart disease.  Here is a critique of the movie showing the “holes” in the The China Study which theorized that meat and dairy are “unhealthy”.

After studying numerous diets and health experts regarding healing our gut, animal products are essential for nourishing our gut.  Many people report higher energy levels, less disease in their bodies (rashes, inflammation, depression, reduction in symptoms, etc) by adding red meat and bone broth to their diet.  Red meat is full of vitamins and minerals that our body needs to fight disease and inflammation.   Chris Kresser has a great article on the vitamins and nutrients in red meat.  Be sure to read Chris’s entire series on red meat.

The most healthy option is 100% grass fed meats, or organic meats (grain fed but without GMOs, antibiotics and hormones) or wild caught seafood/fish or organic poultry because they are the healthiest meats available and extremely nutritious and healing to us and our guts.  Grain fed meats have more Omega 6s which can be inflammatory to our gut.  If you must eat “conventional” meat due to availability/price, etc, be sure to eat the healthiest option possible (without GMOs, without antibiotics, locally sourced, local farm, etc)

Here is an excellent series on Chris Kresser’s blog!  The truth about red meat!

What are fermented foods?

Fermented Foods are foods that contain probiotics.

Due to antibiotic usage, drug usage, toxins in our environment, gluten in our diet, birth control pills, etc, our gut flora is compromised.  As patients with Crohns and Colitis, we absolutely MUST repopulate the healthy gut flora in our intestines which will help seal the lining in our gut and stop the bleeding and diarrhea.  In order for the gut flora to properly populate our gut lining, we must eliminate all the foods discussed on this post.

Add whole food probiotics** (You can make all of these probiotics at home or buy most of them too.  There are many excellent videos on youtube as well as instructions on many blogs as well as info in the GAPs and SCD books)

  • Raw Sauerkraut or Kimchi – I make my own at home now
  • Raw Kombucha – I will likely make at home in the very near future
  • Inner-Eco Coconut Kefir – 100 billion probiotic CFUs in each tablespoon
  • Milk Kefir – If you can tolerate dairy – most of the lactose has been removed in kefir – I make at home with raw goat milk
  • Homemade Yogurt – Start off slowly with yogurt – You may have “die off” – Approx 500 billion probiotic CFUs in each cup – I make at home with raw goat milk
  • Water Kefir – I make at home with coconut water alternating with sugar water – Most of the sugar is “eaten” by the grains used to make the kefir.

What if I have Crohns or UC but I just want to make small changes?

Healthy 3For Crohns and Colitis patients living a comfortable lifestyle on medication without serious side effects, making some small changes in your diet and lifestyle can help you long term.  Below are my recommendations.  For more severe cases of the disease, the following recommendations below are mandatory.

Diet Recommendations

  1. Eliminate (or reduce) gluten**
  2. Eliminate vegetable oils** (Cook with Coconut oil, Olive oil or Animal Fats – Grass fed ghee/butter)
  3. Eliminate (or reduce) processed foods
  4. Eliminate (or reduce) sugar
  5. Eliminate alcohol, soda, etc.
  6. Add whole food probiotics** (You can make all of these probiotics at home or buy most of them too.  There are many videos on youtube, instructions on many blogs as well as info in the GAPs and SCD books)
  • Raw Sauerkraut or Kimchi – I make my own at home now
  • Raw Kombucha – I will likely make at home in the very near future

  • Water Kefir – I make at home with coconut water alternating with sugar water – Most of the sugar is “eaten” by the grains used to make the kefir.
  • Kvass – You can purchase Kvass at your local health food store.  I make my own because I cannot consume stevia.  Very easy to make.  Beet Kvass is most popular but you can make many varieties.

** Most important in my opinion.  I’m open to other suggestions!

Lifestyle Recommendations

  1. Plenty of sleep – Minimum 7 hours – Preferably more – We need sleep to heal!
  2. Reduce stress as much as possible – Most disease occurs after very stressful periods (grief, move, divorce, job change, etc)
  3. Be Positive 🙂
  4. Moderate exercise.  In order to heal, we should not over stress our bodies with “too much” exercise.  Walking, light weights, yoga, hiking, swimming, biking, etc at a moderate pace will be more healing than intense exercise which can over stress your body.
  5. Practice daily relaxation techniques or meditation.

Where do I start?

Healthy Food Healthy YouDisclaimer:  Since I am not a doctor or medical practitioner and I do not know your medical history, please do not start any new diets or stop any medications without speaking to a medical professional first.

First!  Read everything in my blog!!

Next….  Read Breaking the Vicious Cycle by Elaine Gottschall, Gut and Psychology Syndrome by Dr Natasha McBride, and The Paleo Diet by Robb Wolf.

Then…  Get Started on your personal journey to health, healing and vitality!!!!

(I hope to create a list of practitioners/functional doctors to guide you but I don’t have this yet – ask me for advice on finding one)

For both SCD and GAPS diet, there is an “Intro” diet.  If you are very sick with bloody diarrhea, you will need to start VERY slowly on these diets by eliminating most foods from your diet and slowly introducing foods and testing your reaction after introducing new foods.  These diets are not easy but working towards health and vitality is empowering.  You can do it!!!  🙂

GAPS Intro Diet

GAPS Introduction Diet PDF (I started with the GAPS Intro diet)

Message From Dr Natasha before you start GAPS

SCD Intro Diet

You will need to customize the diets to your specific needs.  If you need a practitioner to help you with implementing these diets, there are certified GAPS practitioners as well as Functional Medicine Doctors that can be very helpful.  Many will also work via telephone or Skype so you can choose doctors remotely that have experience with GAPs/SCD/Paleo.  Choose your doctors/health practitioners carefully.  If you have any doctor/practitioner recommendations, please send them my way.  Thank you.
